Eh!

If you noticed the “(u)”s in some words around the website, that’s because Canadians do things a little bit differently. For the most part, you will have no issue getting around the city, but a few local tips might help you get by:

  • Say sorry — even when you’re not sorry at all.

  • Subway = underground, while streetcar = above ground transportation (looks like a trolley)

  • Hard alcohol can only be found in the LCBO. Grocery stores only recently introduced beers and mixed drinks.

  • Washroom = Bathroom/Restroom

  • If you are carrying cash and someone mentions a Loonie and Toonie, they are one and two dollar coins, respectively.

  • Don’t mind if people throw “eh” at the end of everything they say.

  • Try Tim Hortons coffee (famously known for their Double Doubles and Timbits).

  • You can go a step further and try poutine or Beaver Tails, too.

  • Other fun eats that don’t exist in America: Ketchup chips, All Dressed chips, Coffee Crisps.

  • Load your playlists up with some great Canadian artists, like Justin Bieber, Drake, Shania Twain, Shawn Mendes, the Weeknd and Celine Dion.
